Mary Ruth Strickland, age 71, of Bloomburg, Texas went to be with the Lord, Friday, March 26, 2021 in a Shreveport, Louisiana hospital. She was born on September 23, 1949 in Ida, Louisiana to E.F. and Winona Adams Hartline.
Mary graduated from Bright Star High School in 1967. She put herself through nursing school while working as a switchboard operator. After what the local church ladies considered a too brief courtship, she married Jonny Strickland in 1973. Mary was an RN for more than 40 years. She was a floor nurse at Atlanta Memorial and North Caddo. She was a home health nurse after the death of her own father, gave well child checkups in Vivian and taught Lamaze in Atlanta. She was a devoted Bloomburg Wildcats fan for almost all of the 80’s and she thanklessly drove her girls to piano and dance lessons without complaint. She always drove to away games and worked the band booster concession stand, without any fanfare. She was stubborn with the best of intentions. While acting as the school nurse/ chaperone on a Q.C. band trip, she slipped as she stepped off of the bus in Colorado and unknowingly broke her arm. She continued to dole out Tylenol and bandaids for the next three days. She would freely admit that she hated to cook. For that reason, the menu of Jacks’s Fine Food will be forever etched into the memories of her girls. She was a caretaker and advocate to all of her extended family and close friends. She was always running errands for others and a driver to doctor’s appointments. She always wanted to know exactly what the doctor said and she would drop everything to take care of a sick grandchild. She was a devoted Nana to those grandchildren; making up secret words, reading stories, cozying up to watch movies and watching Lego creations come together. Mary was a lovely and kind woman who will be dearly missed.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, James Hartline and Paul Hartline.
She is survived by her husband, Jonny Strickland of Bloomburg, Texas; two daughters, Melissa Strickland of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Amanda Bennett and husband Scott of Oxford, Mississippi; two brothers, Jerry Hartline and wife Sharon of Doddridge, Arkansas, Johnny Hartline of Doddridge, Arkansas; one sister, Margie Thompson and husband Eddie of Bray, Oklahoma; two grandchildren, Callie Bennett, Evan Bennett; and a number of other family and friends.
